JLPT N5 (は Particle)

Usage:

Topic marker (particle)

Explanation

The は particle is generally the first particle introduced to Japanese learners. It is known as the topic marker since it tells the listener what the topic (or subject) of the sentence is. If it helps, you can think of the はparticle as “is” in English. は is placed after the topic of the sentence and points backwards at it using a fun sign. Anything that is placed before the particle is what the speaker is directly referencing with their sentence.

For example, take the English sentence “candy is sweet.” In Japanese this would be translated as飴は甘いです. See how the word for candy is placed before particle? This means that whatever is placed after it is talking about this candy. Now, when you look to the latter half of the sentence you see the word for “sweet.” Okay, so the candy is sweet.
